How to Prepare for Your Headshots
A little preparation makes a big difference. Here are a few simple tips to help you feel confident and look your best:
1. Choose clothing that feels like you — but polished.
Wear something that fits well, feels comfortable, and represents your professional style. Solid colors usually photograph best. Avoid very busy patterns, tiny stripes, or logos unless they are part of your brand.
2. Bring a few options.
Even if we only use one or two looks, having choices helps. A blazer, jacket, sweater, or different top can give us variety without needing a full outfit change.
3. Pay attention to grooming details.
Make sure clothing is clean, steamed or pressed, and lint-free. Hair, nails, facial hair, and makeup should feel polished but still natural. The camera is nosy. Rude, but true.
4. Get some rest and hydrate.
A good night’s sleep and drinking water the day before can help your skin and energy. Try not to schedule your headshots after a stressful morning if you can avoid it.
5. Think about how you want to be seen.
Do you want to look approachable? Confident? Creative? Executive? Warm? Knowing the impression you want to make helps us guide posing, expression, and styling.
6. Don’t worry about knowing how to pose.
That’s my job. I’ll guide you through angles, posture, expressions, and small adjustments so you don’t have to stand there wondering what to do with your hands — the eternal human crisis.
7. Arrive a little early if possible.
Give yourself a few extra minutes to settle in, fix your hair, change if needed, and breathe before we start.
